The Bunbury Geographe is indisputably adventure country, courtesy its stunning and rugged natural landscapes of ranges, valleys, dams, rivers and remote beaches, combined with excellent city facilities. The people of the #BG are obsessed (in a good way) with sport. We can confidently say, there’s not a weekend that goes by where the region is not hosting an event or two. Here are some of the best!


Perth Glory Women vs Canberra United Women – January 2018
Perth Glory Women will take on Canberra United at Hay Park, Bunbury. The team is set to include stars such as Sam Kerr, who plays for the Matilda’s and is currently the all-time leading scorer in the league.

Open Water Swim Series Round 6 –  January 2018
The Open Water Swimming Series descends on Harvey in January. With beautiful freshwater and no currents, Harvey Dam will be the perfect introduction to Open Water Swimming for swimmers at all levels. With 500m, 1.25km, 2.5km, and 5km distances, there’s an opportunity for everyone to find their challenge!

Little Athletics Championships –  January 2018
Bunbury will host the State Country Championships of Little Athletics to be held at Hay Park, Bunbury over two days. The event will feature about 500 junior athletes aged between 5 and 16 years and visitors will come from as far afield as Broome and Esperance.

Bunbury SufferFest Triathlon Festival – February 2018
The sporting excitement continues this summer with the Bunbury Sufferfest Triathlon Festival coming to Bunbury as part of the Australian Beach Games. Bunbury Sufferfest Triathlon is new to the WA and Australian Triathlon Calendar for 2018. This iconic Triathlon Festival will begin in Rotto in November 2017, Bunbury in February, and finish in Cottesloe in Aprill 2018.

Australian Beach Games 2018 – February 2018
Australian Beach Games WA State Championships will take place at the newly redeveloped Koombana Bay Beach. Bunbury will host one of six events around Australia, bringing together beach sports such as volleyball, triathlon, and surf lifesaving, as well as a beach concert utilising the new Koombana Bay amphitheatre.  

Action Sports Games – March 2018
The Games will bring together the worlds best in extreme sports including waterski, wakeboard, skateboard, scooter and more. Tipped to be one of the largest sporting events in regional WA!

BMX National Championships – March 2018
More than 2000 leading BMX competitors will descend on Bunbury for the 2018 National Championships. The 6-day event will be held at the Bunbury BMX Track and feature warm-up sessions, heats and finals. The event will also be a chance for a large local crowd to cheer on home-town hero Lauren Reynolds, who is a dual Olympian and former Oceania BMX champion.

Volley by the Bay and Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships – April 2018
Australia’s emerging beach volleyball players press their claims as this country’s future stars in U17, U19 and U23 age divisions, representing their states and vying for the honour of an underage championship, and the champion state award – the Andy Burdin Shield.

Nitro Circus – April 2018
One of the world’s biggest daredevil events comes to Bunbury in 2018. An all-star international rider lineup will attempt huge tricks and unbelievable world firsts as they take action sports to new heights.


Bunbury & Return Ocean Race – January
The 170 nautical mile race starts off Port Beach in Fremantle and takes the fleet south to Koombana Bay and return. All yachts carry tracking devices which allow anyone to watch the race online or on their mobile device.

Koombana Super Criterium – February
Cyclists will descend on Koombana Bay for racing action.

Koombana Bay Sailing Club Regatta – March
The annual 3-day Regatta offers something for junior sailors to experienced National Champions.

Crave Mountain Bike Challenge & WildBull Run – March
One of the newest iconic Mountain Bike events set in the spectacular Wellington National Park and through Willow Bridge Winery, finishing at Wild Bull Brewery. Or you can run with ‘wild bulls’ (not real) as they are released at the start of all four runs/wallks. The 18km event will start with the unique opportunity to run across the Wellington Dam Wall, along the wild trails of the Collie River and finishing at the Wild Bull Brewery.

Krikke Boys Shoot Out – March
Two nights of spectacular speedway action at one of the biggest races in Australia. With some of the world’s best sprint car drivers in action, fans of fast cars, thrills and spills get their money’s worth.

Barrett Swim Thru – March
Swimmers take to Leschenault Inlet to race against the clock and raise money for the City of Bunbury Lifesavingaving Club.

Millard Classic Fishing Competition – March
With more than $30K up for grabs, fishing enthusiasts fight it out in one of WA’s top fishing competitions.

Bunbury Race Week –  the XXXX Gold Bunbury Cup – March
A week of racing action climaxing with the South West’s premier horse racing event, the Bunbury Cup. A great event full of fashion, fun, champagne, entertainment, and of course, awesome racing!

Bunbury City Classic Triathlon – March
The Classic Triathlon offers participants two options: a standard/Olympic distance triathlon, and a shorter length enticer triathlon. A family orientated community bike ride known as the Back Beach Bike Vlast is held after the triathlon.

Bunbury Geographe Gift – April
Australia’s elite athletes will chase a $78,000 prize pool at the inaugural Bunbury Geographe Gift. Modelled on the famous Stawell Gift, there is a massive $18,000 up for grabs for both male and female winners of the elite 120m handicap event. The Gift will feature a two-day programme of races enhanced by a series of activities to cater for every member of the family.

Great South West Bed Race – April
An entertaining spectacle of fancy dress and elite athleticism rolled into 5 kilometres of competitive bed-racing fundraising for St John of God Bunbury Hospital Cancer and Cardiac Service.

HBF Bunbury 3 Waters Running Festival – April
Competitors tackle an Ultra Marathon and other running events along the picturesque waterways of Bunbury – the City of 3 Waters.

Tom Lowry Memorial Road Race – May
One of Western Australia’s most prestigious road races set in the Collie River Valley.A two-day event including a criterium on one of the safest and fastest courses followed by a traditional road race.  Part of the Elements Road Racing Series.

Targa Bunbury Sprint – June
The best car action in the South West. This free event brings the spectacle of Tarmac Rally Cars to the centre of Bunbury and Halifax with racing action, show and shine and much more. Check out Holdens, Fords, Porsches, EVOs, WRXs, Mustangs, and Escorts in action.

Experts Cup Rally WA Rally Championships – July
Car racing takes over the Collie River Valley and the Wellington Dam region. Watch the dirt fly!

WA XCO Mountain Bike Series – July
It’s Mountain Bike action at Harris River Estate and Ray’s Trails, near Collie for a Round event of the WA XCO Mountain Bike Series. The event caters for all ages and abilities – from WA’s elite cycling fraternity through to the weekend warriors, who are keen to race their mates and test their skills on a state level course.

Collie to Donnybrook and Return Cycling Classic – August
104km handicap cycling road race – The Collie to Donnybrook and Return Cycling Classic is one of Australia’s road cycling classics, rich in tradition and raced over a tough and challenging course.

Ferguson Valley Classic (Elements Road Series) – September
Road race through the valley in the Ferguson Valley Classic, part of the Elements Road Series,
and climb 1500-1600 metres of ascent over 119 kms; making it one of the most challenging events in the cycling series. Then check out the action at the 40km Team Time Trial from the Wild Bull Brewery.

Collie Motorcycle Festival – September
Take a winding road to Collie and make the most of the events planned as part of the Collie Motorcycle Festival, including historic motorcycle racing, rider safety training, country-style hospitality and motorcycle-themed markets and displays.

Collie Adventure Race – October
The Collie Adventure Race is a multi-staged relay race consisting of a canoe leg, mountain bike ride, swim, road bike ride and run. Over the weekend of 14 – 15 October competitors will challenge it out in the Collie River Valley, starting and finishing around the picturesque Minninup Pool

True Grit Perth in Newlands – October
Try your endurance and skills on a military-inspired obstacle challenge in Newlands, via Kirup. With separate events held across Australia, True Grit has a loyal following of dedicated ‘gritters’ determined to tackle the 10-12kms course with 30+ obstacles

Blackwood Marathon – October
Blackwood Marathon is legendary in Western Australia. Since 1979, thousands of competitors have strived to tackled this unique event – horse riding, running, swimming, canoeing and swimming from Boyup Brook to Bridgetown along the beautiful Blackwood River.

Bunbury Surf to Surf Fun Run – October
With a course that takes in the fantastic views of the Bunbury Back Beach, Wyalup-Rocky Point, and Lighthouse, the Bunbury Surf to Surf Fun Run is one of the most scenic running races in the South West.

Harvey Dickson’s Rodeo – October
Throw on your cowboy boots and head to the annual Harvey Dickson Rodeo Weekend. Witness the action and bravery of a Full Point Rodeo, get your line dancing boggie on with live music, devour a straight from the paddock steak burger and much more.

Ferguson Valley Open Garden Trail – October
